Estate Planning and Your Pets

In light of a recent event at TVH where we inherited seven cats as indicated in a client’s will (unbeknownst to either of the Doctors), we feel like this is a teachable moment that many of our pet owners can learn from.

Do you have a plan for your pet if you were to become ill or suddenly pass away? Does your pet have a home in the event of an unexpected situation?

Who will be responsible for their ongoing medical care or will you provide financial support for a limited time?

Please make sure you are having occasional conversations with the designated caregiver of your pet. Making sure your wishes are in writing can go a long way. Also, be aware of people’s changing lifestyles and circumstances. Maybe your best friend agreed to care for your beloved pet ten years ago. Are they still able to care for your aging pet now?

If, as a last resort, TVH must be involved with the care of your pet(s) in the event of your passing, we must be made aware of your plans and it must be in writing.

We are unable to act as a Humane Society, we lack unlimited funds and donations, and can not be expected to care for your pet for the rest of its life. However, we are willing to assist in finding a good home for your pet if you have no other options.

In summary, please make sure you’re having this discussion and have a written agreement in place with whomever you designate as your pet’s caregiver.
